Lights on the Social Security Law

The Social Security Law in Jordan aims to provide social and economic protection for public and private workers, by providing various insurance coverage such as retirement, injuries, disability and death. Here are the main points in Jordanian Social Security Law and its Amendments:

1- Social Security

  • Insurance for old age, disability and deathThe law provides pensions for those who are subject to the Social Security Law when they reach their old age (60 years for men and 55 years for women), as well as in cases of permanent disability or death.
  • Work injury insuranceSocial Security is obliged to cover injuries from work accidents, including medical treatments, and compensation for sick leave due to injury.
  • Maternity InsuranceThe law provides 90-day paid maternity leave for working women.
  • unemployment insuranceThe worker shall be granted temporary compensation in the event of the loss of work against his will, provided that he has fulfilled the necessary subscription conditions.

2- The percentage of subscriptions

  • Aging, disability and death subscription rate21.75% distributed between the employer (14.25%) and the worker. (7.5%)

3-  pension

  • early retirementIt is an option available to workers who wish to end their careers before reaching the legal retirement age, provided that certain requirements such as participation period and age are met. However, this option may reduce your pension as a result of deductions applied.
  • regular retirementThe worker is entitled to a pension upon reaching the legal age (60 years for men and 55 years for women), provided that the required subscription period is completed (180 monthly subscriptions, i.e. 15 years at least).

4-  Sterner sex

  • Permanent total disabilityIf the worker is exposed to an injury or illness that leads to a loss of 75% or more, he is entitled to a pension for a disability.
  • permanent partial disabilityIf the deficit rate is between 30% and 75%, a partial pension will be paid.
  • natural deficitThe worker can get a natural disability pension if medical examinations prove that he is unable to work for health reasons that are not related to work.

5- Work injury insurance

  • Covering all medical costs related to the treatment of work injuries, including surgeries, medical care, and medicines.
  • Compensation is paid to the worker for the temporary disability period due to a work injury.
  • In the event of permanent disability or death due to injury, compensation or pension will be paid to the heirs.

6- Inclusion of foreign workers

  • The law provides for the inclusion of foreign workers in social security programs with the same conditions that apply to local workers, provided that their employment contracts are certified.

7- The due heirs

  • In the event of the death of the subscriber in social security, the legal heirs (such as the wife or husband, the children, the parents) are entitled to a pension, according to a specified percentage of the deceased contributor’s salary.

8- Penalties and legal procedures

  • The law imposes penalties on employers who fail to pay contributions or the registration of social security workers, including fines.
